Lesson 3: Number Analogies (Free)

The next question type we will look at is Number Analogies. An analogy is just a comparison. In this case, the comparison will be between pairs of numbers. Here is an example of what a Number Analogies question looks like: 

[20→25] [30→35] [40→?]

You will have to look at each pair of numbers, figure out the relationship between them, and then use that to figure out what the missing number is in the last pair. 

Before we continue, it’s important to know 2 basic rules for answering these questions: 

1. There are 4 basic relationships that are possible for these questions: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division 
2. The relationship between a pair of numbers must work for every pair.  

We will go over these rules in more detail throughout the lesson. We will also go over how to best find those patterns and how to solve these questions. Let’s take a look at a few more examples and go over how to answer these questions.
