How to Prepare for the NNAT

The NNAT3 is a unique test that can be challenging for young children, especially if they are not familiar with its format and question types. It is important that your child be as prepared as possible for the test. Elm Academy has built comprehensive courses to make sure your child is fully prepared for the NNAT3. Minimizing stress, becoming familiar with unique question types, and simulating a realistic test-taking experience all play a role in helping a child feel confident and ready for test day. Great experience! My son who is 10 y.o. and gifted in math, enjoyed practicing all tests (verbal, quantitative, and non verbal). He had fun going through the lessons and quizzes (especially the long quizzes at the end of each category) over one weekend prior to taking the real CogAT tests at his school the very next week. He was well prepared and very excited to take the real tests. He was the only one who actually finished the real CogAT nonverbal test (the hardest, in my opinion) in his testing group at school. I loved how the lessons were structured and easy to follow. I highly recommend this program. Being prepared makes a big difference even for highly gifted children as my son.

As a tutor, I have used this course as a resource to prepare students. I would highly recommend, one of the best resources I’ve seen for this type of test. The curriculum is well-designed, clear strategies and a good amount of practice problems. I would recommend this to other tutors to supplement resources as well as to parents working with their children.

I have used several books and online courses to prepare my child for the CogAT and this one is hands down the best. The lessons included on how to answer the questions are very thoughtful and helpful. I would recommend this course to any parent looking to prepare their child for the CogAT.

The best course out there for OLSAT. It has the correct amount of difficulty to challenge a child’s thought process and diverse questions to hone different reasoning skills. I had 8 days to prepare my child for GATE testing and this last minute prep was more than sufficient to get her to the finish line. I highly recommend it for all children irrespective of whether they are testing for a GATE program or not.

My daughter did this two days before taking the test. She was much more comfortable in the testing environment, knowing what kinds of questions to expect and scored in the 97th percentile overall. I would recommend this product to other parents hoping to prepare their kids for the CogAT.

This course was great preparation for my son, who ended up doing extremely well on his exam. I appreciate that he was able to understand what to expect before the test and I believe the practice helped build his confidence. We were able to identify potential trouble spots for him and work through them together at home in a low-stress environment. We liked the fact that we could access the lessons and quizzes at our leisure and that we could repeat sections as needed. My son enjoyed the course and was excited to receive his score after each quiz. According to him, he was very glad he was able to use this course and thought that the practice lessons and quizzes were very representative of the exam he was given at school. Thank you for providing this resource! Highly recommend!

All the questions were similar, and the exercises made my son feel safe and gave us experience in how to solve the exam. I thank this academy for the service.

Highly recommend. Since CogAT is now proctored in computer, online practice tests are the way to go. The explanations for the incorrect answers and the lessons were very helpful and straight to the point. Very good value and effective.

Pattern Completion

Pattern completion questions are essentially visual fill in the blank questions. Your child will be shown an image or pattern that has a square missing, and will have to choose the answer choice that correctly completes the picture. These questions are found on all levels of the test. See the example below:

NNAT Pattern Completion Sample Question

The correct answer is the first option. If you look at the colors in the pattern, you can see that the right side of the empty box will be yellow, and the left side will be blue. This means you can eliminate the second and third answer choices. If you follow the line from the top of the pattern, you will see that it roughly cuts the empty box in half. This means the yellow and blue half of the missing box will be roughly the same size, you we can eliminate the fourth answer choice. Finally, if you look at the bottom of the box, you will see that it ends before the horizontal yellow section of the pattern begins, meaning that you can eliminate the fifth answer choice. This leaves you with the first answer choice as the correct answer.

Reasoning by Analogy

Reasoning by Analogy questions will present your child with a 2 x 2 grid with two figures in the top row, and one picture in the bottom row. Your child will have to figure out the relationship present in the top row, and determine what picture completes the analogy in the bottom row. These questions are found on all levels of the test. See the sample question below:

NNAT Reasoning by Analogy Sample Question

The correct answer is the fourth option, the down-pointing arrow with the yellow circle above it. In the top row, the first shape is a blue triangle with a yellow diamond in the middle. The second shape is the same blue triangle, but it has been turned upside down, and the yellow diamond is now above the triangle instead of being inside of it.

In the bottom row, the first shape is a blue arrow that is pointing upward, with a yellow circle inside of it. If we follow the same pattern as the top row, the correct answer will have the same arrow turned upside down, with the yellow circle above it.

Serial Reasoning

Serial Reasoning questions are similar to Analogy questions, presenting your child with a 3 x 3 grid that has patterns going both across and down the matrix. The final square in the matrix will be empty, and your child will have to determine the missing figure that completes the matrix. These questions are found on levels B-G. See the sample question below:

NNAT Serial Reasoning Sample Question

The correct answer is the third option, the blue pentagon with 3 yellow dots inside of it. There are 3 patterns to notice: first, each row has 3 figures that contain the same shape that remains the same color. Second, going from left to right through each row, the shape gets bigger. Third, going from top to bottom in each column, the number of dots increases from 1 to 3. This means the correct answer must be a pentagon that is blue, is bigger than the other 2 pentagons in its row, and has 3 yellow dots.

Spatial Visualization

Spatial Visualization will assess your child’s spatial skills. These questions focus on abilities related to being able to manipulate shapes and figures in space. For example, a question may require your child to visualize what happens when a figure is rotated a certain way, or when shapes from two figures are combined. These questions are found on levels C-G. See the sample question below:

NNAT Spatial Visualization Sample Question

The correct answer is the fourth option, which shows a blue lightning bolt over a yellow crescent moon. Starting in the top row, the first frame shows a yellow sun. The second frame shows a blue circle. In the last frame, the blue circle has moved in front of the yellow sun.

The second row must follow the same pattern. In the first frame, there is a yellow crescent moon. In the second frame, there is a blue lightning bolt. If we follow the pattern seen in the top row, the last frame will show the blue lightning bolt move in front of the yellow moon.
