Realistic CogAT Practice Tests
The CogAT is a unique test that is likely different from anything you child will have seen in school. Becoming familiar with the test’s question types and format so that they aren’t seeing them for the first time on test day is crucial to doing well on the CogAT.
Practicing with realistic, timed, full-length tests is the best way to familiarize your child with the test. This also helps your child work under the pressure of the limited administration time. Experiencing a realistic practice test will make taking the real test an easier experience for your child, and will allow them to perform to the best of their abilities.
Course Structure & Study Schedule
Test prep companies will often sell you a book or a practice test and leave children and their parents to figure out the rest. Young children may struggle when faced with preparing for a test like this without any instruction, and as parents, it’s difficult to know how to guide them through the preparation process.
This is why we’ve designed a structured course outline that includes recommended study schedules and additional study tips to help parents and their children prepare for the test. The Parent Guide is the first step you will see when accessing your account.
Detailed Lessons & Quizzes
Our course includes one lesson for each specific question type that appears on the CogAT, for a total of 9 lessons. Every lesson is followed by a short quiz to review and reinforce the specific concepts covered. These lessons will allow them to become familiar with each of the CogAT’s distinct question types before the test.
About the CogAT Kindergarten
The CogAT, or Cognitive Abilities Test, is a standardized multiple choice test that is often used to assess children for gifted and talented programs.
The basics:
- 118 total questions
- 3 batteries with 3 subtests each
- 2-3 hours administration time
- Paper-and-pencil or online
- Reading not required. Instructions on verbal section are read aloud
The CogAT is divided by age level, meaning that the CogAT Level 5/6 is designed for children who are 5 or 6 years old. Since this often corresponds to being in kindergarten, it is often administered to all kindergarteners. Since this is the lowest level of the test, it is sometimes used to assess children who are even younger than 5 years old.
The CogAT Level 5/6 includes three sections, called batteries: the Verbal Battery, Quantitative Battery, and Nonverbal Battery. Each battery contains three subtests for a total of nine subtests, and each subtest contains one specific question type. In total, this means the test is made up of nine unique question styles. The three batteries add up to a total of 118 questions.
Schools will often administer all three batteries at once, though they may decide to administer them separately. Check out the table below for a breakdown of each battery and its subtests:
Quantitative Battery | Verbal Battery | Nonverbal Battery |
Number Puzzles | Sentence Completion | Figure Matrices |
Number Series | Picture Analogies | Figure Classification |
Number Analogies | Picture Classification | Paper Folding |
An abridged version of the test, called the CogAT Screening Form, is used to assess students more quickly. It contains only one question type from each section: Number Analogies from the Quantitative Battery, Verbal Analogies from the Verbal Battery, and Figure Matrices from the Nonverbal Battery. The questions are the same as the ones that appear on the full CogAT, so our courses can be used to effectively prepare for the CogAT Screening Form.
Since this test is administered to very young children, the Verbal battery does not test traditional verbal abilities, such as reading and writing. Instead, it will measure critical thinking and listening abilities, as well as the ability to follow instructions. For many questions, the teacher administering the test will read instructions aloud for each question. Students will have to listen and choose the correct answer accordingly. The instructions for this section are also available to read aloud in Spanish for Spanish-speaking students. Our course includes audio instructions for these questions, currently available only in English.

You can also try the free CogAT sample questions below or in this PDF. There are 9 questions, one for each question type.
Number Puzzles
Answer: The correct answer is 2 tennis balls. In the first train, there are 4 tennis balls. In the second train, there are 2 tennis balls. We need to find how many tennis balls go in the last train car to make the two sides equal. If we add 2 tennis balls to 2 tennis balls, we get 4 tennis balls.
Number Series
Answer: The correct answer is 5 beads. From left to right, there are 2, 3, and 4 beads. This means that in each row, the number of beads increases by 1. If we continue this pattern, the next row will have 1 more than 4, which is 5 beads.
Number Analogies
Answer: The correct answer is the 4 triangles. In the top row, the first box has 2 circles. The second box has 4 circles, meaning 2 circles were added.
The bottom row should follow the same pattern. In the first box, there are 2 triangles. If we add 2 triangles, this will give us 4 triangles as the correct answer.
Sentence Completion
These questions will have instructions read aloud by the teacher. We have included audio files like the one below in all Sentence Completion questions in our course.
Answer: The correct answer is the picture that has a cat in the middle, with one dog to its left, and one dog to its right.
Picture Analogies
Answer: The correct answer is the glasses. In the top row, the first picture is of an ear. The second picture is a pair of headphones. Headphones are worn on your ears.
The bottom row should follow the same pattern. The first picture shows an eye. The correct answer will be something that you wear over your eyes, making glasses the correct answer.
Picture Classification
The three pictures in the top row are like each other in some way. Which picture in the bottom row goes best with the pictures in the top row?
Answer: The correct answer is the chicken. These are all birds.
Figure Matrices
Answer: The correct answer is the grey pentagon with the gold star in the middle. In the top row, the first box has a white parallelogram. In the second box, there is a similar parallelogram, except it is now grey, and a gold star has appeared in the middle.
The bottom row should follow the same pattern. In the first box, there is a white pentagon. This means the correct answer should have a pentagon that is grey and has a gold star in the middle.
Figure Classification
The three pictures in the top row are like each other in some way. Which picture in the bottom row goes best with the pictures in the top row?
Answer: The correct answer is the green triangle. These are all triangles.
Paper Folding
Answer: The paper is folded in half once vertically, then a heart is cut out. When it is unfolded, there will be 2 hearts on either side of where the paper was folded with a little space in between them.

I have used several books and online courses to prepare my child for the CogAT and this one is hands down the best. The lessons included on how to answer the questions are very thoughtful and helpful. I would recommend this course to any parent looking to prepare their child for the CogAT.
