Realistic CogAT Practice Tests

The best way to familiarize your child with the CogAT is to take realistic, timed, full-length practice tests. Since the CogAT has many unique question types, practicing with realistic tests will allow them to become familiar with them. This also helps your child work under the pressure of the test’s limited administration time.

Course Structure & Study Schedule

Young children often struggle when faced with preparing for a standardized test with little structure or guidance. As parents, it’s difficult to know how to guide them through the preparation process when many test prep companies will sell you practice materials and little else to work with. This is why we’ve designed a structured course outline that includes recommended study schedules and additional study tips for parents to help guide their children through the preparation process.

Detailed Lessons & Quizzes

The course includes one lesson for each specific question type for a total of 9 lessons. Each is followed by a short quiz to reinforce the specific concepts covered in each lesson. The CogAT’s question types are unique and are unlike anything your child has seen in school, and these lessons will allow them to become familiar with each of them before the test.

About the CogAT 1st Grade

The CogAT, or Cognitive Abilities Test, is a standardized multiple choice test that is often used to assess children for gifted and talented programs.

The basics:

  • 136 total questions
  • 3 batteries with 3 subtests each
  • 2-3 hours administration time
  • Paper-and-pencil or online
  • Reading not required. Instructions on verbal section are read aloud

The CogAT is divided by age level, meaning that the CogAT Level 7 is designed for children who are 7 years old. Since this often corresponds to being in 1st grade, it is often administered to all 1st graders.

The CogAT Level 7 includes three sections, called batteries: the Verbal Battery, Quantitative Battery, and Nonverbal Battery. Each battery contains three subtests for a total of nine subtests. Each subtest contains one specific question type, meaning the test is made up in total of nine unique question styles. The three batteries add up to a total of 136 questions.

Schools will often administer all three batteries at once, though they may decide to administer them separately. Check out the table below for a breakdown of each battery and its subtests:

Quantitative Battery Verbal Battery Nonverbal Battery
Number Puzzles Sentence Completion  Figure Matrices
Number Series Picture Analogies Figure Classification
Number Analogies Picture Classification  Paper Folding

On the Level 7, the Verbal battery does not test traditional verbal abilities, such as reading and writing. Instead, it will measure critical thinking and listening abilities, as well as the ability to follow instructions. For many questions, the teacher administering the test will read instructions aloud for each question. Students will have to listen and choose the correct answer accordingly. The instructions for this section are also available to read aloud in Spanish for Spanish-speaking students. Our course includes audio instructions for these questions, currently available only in English.

An abridged version of the test, called the CogAT Screening Form, is used to assess students more quickly. It contains only one question type from each section: Number Analogies from the Quantitative Battery, Verbal Analogies from the Verbal Battery, and Figure Matrices from the Nonverbal Battery. The questions are the same as the ones that appear on the full CogAT, so our courses can be used to effectively prepare for the CogAT Screening Form.

Number Puzzles

Answer: The correct answer is 3 donuts. In the first train, there are 7 donuts. In the second train, there are 4 donuts. We need to find how many donuts go in the last train car to make the two sides equal. If we add 3 donuts to 4 donuts, we get 7 donuts.

Number Series

Answer: The correct answer is 8 beads. From left to right, there are 2, 4, and 6 beads. This means that in each row, the number of beads increases by 2. If we continue this pattern, the next row will have 2 more than 6, which is 8 beads.

Number Analogies

Answer: The correct answer is the 5 snowflakes. In the top row, the first box has 4 butterflies. The second box has 5 butterflies, meaning that 1 butterfly was added.

The bottom row should follow the same pattern. In the first box, there are 4 snowflakes. If we add 1 snowflake, this will give us 5 snowflakes as the correct answer.

Sentence Completion

These questions will have instructions read aloud by the teacher. We have included audio files like the one below in all Sentence Completion questions in our course.

The bottom row should follow the same pattern. The first picture shows a snowman. The correct answer will be something that a snowman is made of, making the snowflake the right answer.

Figure Matrices

Answer: The correct answer is the larger black diamond with the smaller grey triangle inside. In the top row, the first box has a larger grey square with a small black circle in the middle. In the second box, the same shapes appear, but they have switched sizes so that the circle is larger and the square is small. Also, the circle is now behind the square.

The bottom row should follow the same pattern. In the first box, there is a large grey triangle with a small black diamond in the middle. The correct answer should then have the shapes switch sizes and have the diamond move to the back, so that there is a large black diamond with a small grey triangle in the middle of it.

Figure Classification

The three pictures in the top row are like each other in some way. Which picture in the bottom row goes best with the pictures in the top row?
