Realistic CCAT Practice Tests
The CCAT is a difficult test with many unique question types, so the best way to prepare is by taking realistic, timed, full-length tests. This allows your child to become familiar with the question types so that they aren’t caught off guard when it comes time to take the real test. The CCAT in particular has many question types that would likely be confusing if you’re seeing them for the first time.
The CCAT is also a timed test, so practicing with a full-length test will also help your child work under the pressure of the limited administration time. All in all, experiencing a realistic practice test will make taking the real test a less stressful experience for your child, and will allow them to perform to the best of their abilities.
About the CCAT Grade 3
The Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test, or CCAT, is the Canadian version of the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test). It is a standardized multiple choice test that is used to assess reasoning skills. The CCAT is often used by schools to assess children for gifted and talented or other advanced school programs.
The basics:
- 170 total questions
- 3 batteries with 3 subtests each
- 90 minutes administration time
- Paper-and-pencil or online
The CCAT is not divided by grade level. Instead, it is divided by age level, meaning that the CCAT Level 9 is designed to be taken by children who are 9 years old. Since this age generally corresponds with being in grade 3, schools often administer the CCAT Level 9 to all 3rd graders. However, it is best to check with your school to see which level of the test they will be administering, as it is not uncommon for schools to test above or below grade level.
The test is made up of three separate sections, called batteries: the Verbal Battery, Quantitative Battery, and Nonverbal Battery. Each battery is further divided into three subtests, each made up of a unique question type. This means that in total there are nine question types. Schools may choose to administer all three batteries together or separately. They may also decide to only administer one or two of them. In total, the three batteries add up to 170 questions.

Answer: The correct answer is 63. The first pair of numbers is 4 and 28. The relationship is that 28 is 4 multiplied by 7 (4 x 7 = 28). The last pair of numbers must also follow the same pattern, meaning that the missing number will be 9 multiplied by 7, giving us 63 (9 x 7 = 63).
Sentence Completion

Answer: The correct answer is solution. By reading through the sentence, it is clear that Amanda was able to find something that would help solve the problem for everyone. The word solution means a way of solving a problem, making it the correct answer.
Verbal Analogies

Answer: The correct answer is deep. The first pair of words, decrease and increase, are opposites. The word decrease means to make something smaller, and the word increase means to make something larger.

Verbal Classification
The three words in the top row are like each other in some way. Which word from the choices below goes best with the words in the top row?

Figure Matrices
Answer: The correct answer is the fourth option. In the top row, there are 3 shapes in the first box: a large blue triangle, a smaller grey square, and an even smaller black circle. The same 3 shapes appear in the second box, but with a few changes. First, the triangle has switched from being the largest shape to the smallest shape. Second, the circle has switched from being the smallest shape to the largest. Third, the triangle is now upside down. The grey square does not change.
The bottom row should follow the same pattern. The first box has a large black pentagon, a smaller white trapezoid, and an even smaller grey plus sign. The correct answer will show these 3 shapes changing in the same way the shapes changed in the top row. First, the large black pentagon will become the smallest shape. Second, the plus sign will become the largest shape. Third, the pentagon will flip upside down. The white trapezoid does not change.
Figure Classification
The three pictures in the top row are like each other in some way. Which picture in the bottom row goes best with the pictures in the top row?
Answer: The correct answer is the blue heart with the arrow. All of these shapes have an arrow as part of the shape.
Paper Folding
Answer: The correct answer is the first option. First, the paper is folded in half diagonally. Next, a semi circle is cut out along the fold, and a circle is cut out near the bottom right corner. When the paper is unfolded, the semi circle along the fold will open into a full circle, and the circle in the bottom right corner will reflect over the fold and create another circle in the top left corner.
