Realistic OLSAT Practice Tests

The best way to prepare for the OLSAT is with realistic, timed, full-length practice tests. The OLSAT contains many unique question types that are likely unfamiliar to your child, so going in prepared will ensure that they don’t get caught off guard on test day. Preparing with a full-length test will allow your child to become familiar with each of the specific question types so that they’re fully prepared for the real test.

Full-length practice tests also allow your child to get used to working under the pressure of a time limit. Pacing yourself on a timed test is just as important as being able to answer the individual questions. All in all, experiencing a realistic practice test is the best way to prepare and to ensure that your child performs to the best of their abilities on the real test.

About the OLSAT 1st Grade

The OLSAT, or Otis-Lennon School Ability Test, is a standardized multiple choice test that is frequently used to assess students for gifted and talented and other advanced school programs.

The basics:

  • 60 total questions
    • 30 Verbal Questions
    • 30 Nonverbal Questions
  • 75 minute administration time
  • Reading not required. Instructions on Verbal section read aloud.

The OLSAT is divided by grade level. In general, the OLSAT Level B is administered to 1st grade students. While this is the most likely version of the test your 1st grader will take, it’s best to check with your school in advance, as some schools may test above or below grade level.

The OLSAT Level B contains 60 questions: 30 Verbal questions, and 30 Nonverbal questions. Both the Verbal and Nonverbal sections have subcategories, which each include specific question types. In total, the OLSAT Level B includes 9 question types. See the table below for the breakdown:

Verbal Nonverbal
Verbal Comprehension Verbal Reasoning Pictorial Reasoning Figural Reasoning
Following Directions Aural Reasoning Picture Classification Figural Classification
Arithmetic Reasoning Picture Analogies Figural Analogies
Pattern Matrix
Figural Series

Since this level of the test does not assess a child’s reading and writing abilities, questions on the Verbal section focus on abilities such as the ability to follow directions, comprehend instructions, and detect patterns. Many of these questions will have the instructions read aloud by the instructor. We have included audio recordings for these questions in our courses.

Pattern Matrix

OLSAT 1st Grade Pattern Matrix

Answer: The correct answer is the three green hearts. Each row row has the same shape in the same color in each frame. The only difference is that the number of shapes increases as you go across from 1 to 2 to 3. This means in the bottom row, the last frame will be 3 green hearts.

Figural Series

OLSAT 1st Grade Figural Series

Answer: The correct answer is the blue heptagon. Going across the series, the number of sides each shape has increases by one: the first frame has a triangle (3 sides), the next frame has a parallelogram (4 sides), then a pentagon (5) and a hexagon (6). This means the next shape must have 7 sides.
