Realistic SCAT Practice Tests
The best way to prepare your child for the SCAT is with realistic, full-length practice tests. This test is likely harder than anything your child has ever taken, since it is an above-grade-level test. This means that the material on it is designed for 4th and 5th grade students. Practicing as much as possible, and becoming familiar with the test’s format and question types, will go a long way toward getting a high score.
Practicing with full-length tests also allows your child to get used to working under the pressure of a time limit. The SCAT has 55 questions in each section that must be completed in 22 minutes, which means your child will have to learn to work quickly! Being able to pace yourself on a timed test is just as important as knowing how to answer the individual questions. Experiencing a realistic practice test is the best way to ensure that your child performs to the best of their abilities on the real test.
About the SCAT Elementary
The Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth, or CTY, uses the School and College Ability Test, or SCAT, to identify children for its gifted program. The SCAT is a standardized multiple choice test that is considered an above-grade-level test, meaning that students will take a version of the test that is designed for students in a higher grade level. The SCAT Elementary is offered to students in 2nd and 3rd grade, but contains material that is designed for students in 4th and 5th grade.
Some basics about the SCAT Elementary:
- 110 total questions
- 55 Verbal Questions
- 55 Quantitative Questions
- 22 minutes per section
- Computer-based
The SCAT contains two sections of 55 questions each. However, only 50 questions in each section will count towards your score, as 5 questions in each section are considered experimental questions. However, these questions are not marked, so your child will still have to answer all 55 questions.
The SCAT has only two sections: Verbal and Quantitative. The Verbal section is made up entirely of verbal analogy questions, where your child will be presented with a pair of words and will have to choose the pair of words from the answer choices that best go with the original pair. The Quantitative section contains questions that are not standard multiple choice questions, and do not require any calculations. Instead, they are basic comparison questions that will present two values and ask to determine which is greater, or if they are the equal. These comparisons will test a wide range of mathematical skills, and may include everything from fractions and decimals to geometry and probability.
